PLAYA JACO |
| |
The best thing you can say about PLAYA JACÓ is that it's the closest
beach to San José. Just three hours (102km) from the capital, it
attracts a mix of surfers, weekenders and holidaying Ticos, from party-hearty
students to working-class families. If you've been stuck in San José and
are desperate to get to a beach, you might want to take advantage of the
weekend specials at larger hotels like the Best Western Jacó Beach . But
if you have dreams of swimming in the Pacific off pristine white sands,
forget it - for one, the water is reported to be polluted near the
estuaries; and elsewhere it can be dangerous.
Despite the caveats, it's impossible to overstate Jacó's popularity with
surfers (May-Nov), Canadian package tourists (Dec-March) and Joséfinos (all
year); be sure to make reservations during the high season (Dec-April),
especially at weekends
